New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he would ask U.S. President Donald Trump to end federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the city after agents wounded a man in a car with a five-year-old child.
Mamdani said preliminary information indicated that agents surrounded a car carrying the man and child before several shots were fired. City police and local media reported that the man was wounded and taken to a hospital. The mayor said the child was unharmed.
The Associated Press also reported that an ICE officer shot and wounded a man while making an arrest in New York on Thursday, October 9. It quoted Mamdani as calling the situation unacceptable and saying he intended to discuss ending all federal immigration enforcement actions in the city with Trump.
The mayor said he had already called the president and would not stand by while federal agents carried out operations in city neighbourhoods. The RIA Novosti report did not include a response from federal authorities. Details of the shooting and arrest remain based on preliminary information and city sources.
