Britain lost 295 pubs in first nine months, industry association says
The British Beer and Pub Association counted 295 permanent pub closures between January and September 2026 and forecasts roughly 360 by the end of the year.
The association estimates that the full-year losses could affect about 5,000 jobs, with more than half of the workers aged under 25. It puts the potential reduction in tax receipts at nearly £72 million.
For comparison, 336 pubs closed last year. Almost 2,200 venues have shut over the past five years, according to the industry body.
The association welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham's announced 20% business rates cut for pubs, clubs and live music venues but urged the government to broaden its support.
Chief executive Emma McClarkin called for a freeze in beer duty, increased draught relief and a review of employment costs for under-25s. Those requests represent the industry's proposals, rather than further measures announced by the government.
