Court-ordered survey of Kerala University land begins amid dispute

Officials are to compare the land with university records and submit a report to the High Court by Oct. 15.

Authorities in Kerala have begun surveying land belonging to the University of Kerala after a direction from the state’s High Court. Revenue Minister A.P. Anil Kumar said officials will compare their measurements with the university’s records and submit a report to the court by Oct. 15.

The minister said the survey covers only university land. He specifically said the former headquarters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the AKG Centre, is not part of the measurement. A notice was sent to the centre because it shares a boundary with the university property.

The dispute follows a petition by R.S. Sasikumar, chair of the Save University Campaign Committee and a member of the university’s syndicate. He challenges the assignment of university land, alleging it was used contrary to the terms of the grant. The party has argued that the court’s direction to survey the property could also cover two survey plots held by the AKG Centre.

Local reports have described the scope of the survey differently. Some said it would include the disputed AKG Centre property, while the minister told The Hindu that officials were measuring only university land. The court case remains unresolved. The minister said the court would issue further directions after receiving the report from revenue and survey officials.
