Pakistan Navy Ship Yarmook intercepted two dhows and recovered 850 kilograms of methamphetamine and 2,000 kilograms of hashish from concealed compartments. The military valued the drugs at about $96 million.
Pakistan’s military media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations, said the two operations took place in the Arabian Sea at an extended distance from the country’s coast. The narcotics were found in hidden compartments aboard the two dhows.
The seized drugs were taken into custody and will be handed over to the relevant authorities for disposal and legal proceedings, ISPR said. President Asif Ali Zardari praised the Navy, saying its work to prevent illegal activity within Pakistan’s maritime boundaries and protect regional maritime security was commendable.
The $96 million valuation applies to the latest seizures. In late September, the Navy reported a separate joint operation in the Arabian Sea in which ships Hunain and Yarmook seized more than 2.8 tonnes of drugs valued at about $750 million. In June, the Navy also reported seizing 1.5 tonnes of hashish and 500 kilograms of methamphetamine near Gwadar. Those were separate operations.
