Ana Carolina Oliveira and Leniel Borel won seats in the federal legislature with campaigns focused on public safety and child protection. They received 246,741 and 72,658 votes, respectively.
Ana Carolina Oliveira and Leniel Borel have been elected to Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies for four-year terms. Oliveira, a Podemos candidate in São Paulo state, received 246,741 votes. Borel, of the PP in Rio de Janeiro, won 72,658, CNN Brasil reported. The Chamber of Deputies’ official list also names both among those elected.
Oliveira is the mother of Isabella Nardoni, who died in 2008. Before the election, Oliveira served on São Paulo’s municipal council and advocated public safety and support for victims of violence. Borel, the father of Henry Borel, who died in 2021, centred his campaign on child protection. He also previously served as a municipal councillor.
Their election reflects a strategy by centrist and centre-right parties to use candidates with strong public profiles to build their federal caucuses. CNN Brasil said Oliveira and Borel campaigned on public safety, support for victims and child protection.
