Party leader Sorin Grindeanu called for a cabinet lineup and measures to protect purchasing power, warning that continued austerity could leave early elections as the only option.
Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) will not join a new government or give the designated prime minister a “blank cheque” without a clear reform plan, party leader Sorin Grindeanu said in response to the president’s initiative to form a cabinet.
Grindeanu said the party leadership would hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday. He called on the prime minister-designate to publicly present the cabinet lineup and a package to protect citizens’ purchasing power while maintaining budget discipline. Continuing the austerity policy of former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s cabinet, he said, could leave early elections as the only way forward.
The Social Democrat leader said Romania urgently needs a fully empowered government, rather than another temporary cabinet, to adjust current spending and prepare the 2027 state budget. He also urged political parties to take the balance of power in parliament into account when forming a governing coalition.
Romania’s political crisis has continued since a center-right coalition collapsed in May 2026. Lawmakers have already rejected three proposed prime-ministerial candidates, RIA Novosti reported. The PSD has 126 seats in parliament, 91 in the Chamber of Deputies and 35 in the Senate. Without its votes, approval of a cabinet could be at risk.
