Ronaldo could face suspension after leaving Portugal camp

The Portuguese Football Federation’s rules allow a ban of one to six months for an unjustified departure from the national team, but no final decision on Cristiano Ronaldo has been announced.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 amid a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. This happened before the Nations League match against Denmark, not after the game with Norway as one report stated.

Article 160 of the federation’s disciplinary rules provides for a suspension of one to six months if a player leaves a national-team training session, match or other activity without a valid reason. Professional players may also be fined. Portuguese broadcaster RTP says the rule’s application depends on the circumstances and the federation’s assessment.

The newspaper A Bola reported that Ronaldo could face a sanction. However, radio station Renascença reported on October 6 that disciplinary proceedings had not yet been initiated. The length of any penalty is therefore not settled. Ronaldo publicly acknowledged that he should not have left camp and said the federation should assess his actions.
