On October 7, Sergei Nechaev told RIA Novosti that he views close ties between Moscow and Berlin as important to Germany’s security; his remarks represent the Russian diplomat’s position.
Russian Ambassador to Berlin Sergei Nechaev told RIA Novosti on October 7, 2026, that in his view attempts at military confrontation with Russia had historically ended in catastrophe for Germany. He urged German and European politicians to take lessons from the past into account.
Discussing prospects for Russia-Germany relations, Nechaev described history as cyclical and called close political, economic and social ties with Russia a guarantee of Germany’s security and prosperity, and of rising living standards. He also referred to post-war reconciliation between the two peoples.
Nechaev referred to Russian Foreign Ministry statements that Moscow is ready for dialogue with NATO on an equal basis, and to President Vladimir Putin’s stated position that Russia does not intend to attack NATO countries. RIA Novosti presented these points as the diplomat’s statements; they are attributed claims, not an independent assessment of relations or security.
