The Russian all-around champion and BRICS Games winner is leaving the sport after spinal surgery. Irina Viner said Popova competed for years with back pain and will now assist her in her work.
Russian rhythmic gymnast Anna Popova has decided to end her competitive career. Honoured coach Irina Viner, commenting on the decision, described Popova as a national champion and winner of international competitions. Viner said Popova missed the world championships during a period when Russian athletes were not allowed to compete there.
According to Viner, Popova had spinal problems from childhood. She continued competing with back pain and did not complain about it. The BRICS Games, where she won, were the final competition of her career. Popova continued training afterward, then underwent surgery. Viner said several titanium vertebrae are now in the athlete’s spine.
Viner said Popova remained devoted to gymnastics during her recovery. The coach said she had asked the athlete to become her assistant and eventually take her place in the work. The source gives no further details about Popova’s future role in the sport.
