Russian diplomat comments on French police actions at student protests

Maria Zakharova referred to detentions and the use of tear gas during demonstrations over problems in the education system.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the use of force by French police at high school student protests. In a Telegram post, she called for a response from European politicians and human rights advocates.

French high school students have been protesting for a second week over overloaded schedules, teacher shortages and other education problems. According to figures cited by RIA Novosti from French sources, more than 6,000 people have been detained since the protests began, most of them minors.

Paris police earlier used tear gas and stun grenades after demonstrators threw rubbish bins at officers accompanying a march. French media also reported tear gas in Toulouse, Lyon, Nantes, Rennes and Laval. Reuters and the Associated Press have also reported tear gas and large demonstrations in France.
