Seventeen injured in clashes between protesters and police in Pristina

The violence followed a parliamentary impasse over proposed limits on the Hague court dealing with Kosovo war crimes.

At least 17 people were injured in clashes between protesters and police in Pristina, Hungarian news agency MTI reported, citing local information. The injured included 11 civilians and six police officers. Three people were detained.

The demonstrators gathered outside parliament after lawmakers failed to complete passage of amendments that would curb the powers of the Hague-based court handling crimes committed by the former Kosovo Liberation Army. Protesters demanded a vote and blocked lawmakers from leaving the building.

Protesters threw stones and pyrotechnics at police and the building and set rubbish bins on fire, according to the report. Police used tear gas and water cannon. The opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo called the police response disproportionate and urged authorities to stop violence against protesters.

The proposed amendments would cap prison terms at 15 years, allow sentences to be served in Kosovo subject to a Supreme Court decision, and make presidential pardons possible. The Associated Press and Reuters also reported clashes after parliament stalled the bill.
