Psychologist and sexologist Olga Vasilenko says some men may struggle to maintain an erection or reach orgasm when partnered sex does not match the stimulation they are used to.

Psychologist and sexologist Olga Vasilenko has warned that some men can become accustomed to a very specific form of stimulation. If it cannot be reproduced during sex with a partner, they may have difficulty maintaining an erection or ejaculating, she said.

Vasilenko linked such cases to habits including pornography use, a very tight grip and other forms of stimulation that are difficult to replicate with a partner. She said the issue can affect men as well as women, although difficulties reaching orgasm are more often discussed in relation to women.

Her comments concern particular patterns and should not be read as a claim that masturbation generally harms sexual health. Vasilenko advised people experiencing difficulties to consider whether their usual technique can be adapted to partnered sex.

Persistent problems with erections, ejaculation or sensitivity are a reason to speak with a doctor or a qualified sexual-health professional.
