St Petersburg proposes closer monitoring of public transport drivers

St Petersburg's Transport Committee has proposed closer monitoring of drivers following cases of phone use during journeys. Specific new measures have not yet been announced.
Committee representatives described the detected cases as isolated and said the drivers involved had already been penalised. Nevertheless, the city's transport officials consider tighter monitoring necessary to improve passenger safety.
Deputy committee chairman Denis Usanov proposed keeping a record of each driver's violations and paying closer attention to their physical and psychological condition. He also called for designated staff to oversee the work and urged a responsible approach to passenger safety.
A service called Passenger Voice is being tested on selected bus routes in the Krasnoselsky district. A QR code inside the bus allows passengers to rate the driver's work. When a complaint is submitted, the system identifies the journey using GLONASS data and attaches footage from onboard cameras.
The announcements concern proposals for stronger oversight and trials on selected routes. No date has been announced for extending the service across the city's public transport network.
