The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is due to be announced in Stockholm on Monday, opening this year’s Nobel week at the Karolinska Institute.
Last year’s medicine prize went to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi for discoveries about peripheral immune tolerance, a process that helps keep the immune system from attacking the body’s own tissues. Experts have said the work is important to understanding autoimmune diseases including Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
The physics prize is scheduled for Tuesday, chemistry for Wednesday, literature for Thursday and the peace prize for Friday. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel will be announced on Oct. 12.
This year’s prize amount is 12 million Swedish kronor, or about $1.2 million, whether it is awarded to one person, a small group of laureates or an organization.
