Tulu edition of book on freedom fighter Jatthappa Rai to be launched in Mangaluru

Gandhi Pajjeda Sadi Patthondu will be released at University College on October 8, alongside a seminar and a talk on Gandhi and world peace.

The Kumbra Jatthappa Rai Foundation and partner organisations will launch Gandhi Pajjeda Sadi Patthondu in Mangaluru on October 8. The book is the Tulu translation of Gandhi Hejjeya Jadinalli Jatthappa Rai Jeevanagathe, edited by Aerya Lakshminarayana Alva. The event is scheduled for 10.30 a.m. at University College.

The launch will be followed by a seminar and a talk titled “Gandhi and World Peace” by Shrikrishna Gajanana Kulkarni, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson. Foundation founder Pramod Kumar Rai said the programme is dedicated to freedom fighter Kumbra Jatthappa Rai.

The event is being organised with Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi-Bengaluru, University College-Mangaluru, the Tulu Adhyayana Peetha at Mangalore University and other groups. Former Kannada University vice-chancellor B.A. Vivek Rai will release the book, while Karnataka Health Minister U.T. Khader, who is also in charge of Dakshina Kannada district, will inaugurate the programme.

The Kannada biography was published through the Rashtra Kavi Manjeshwara Govinda Pai Research Centre, and an English edition appeared several years ago. In September, Karnataka’s Cabinet granted Tulu additional official-language status for administrative purposes in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
