A property on the outskirts of Reading with a four-level network of underground tunnels and rooms, dug by its owner over decades, is going to auction. The guide price is £300,000 to £325,000.
BTG Eddisons’ listing says the underground complex covers about 1,380 square feet and is served by a goods lift and a private water supply. The property description says the tunnels descend more than 15 metres and include a railway for moving excavated soil and a lift capable of carrying up to one tonne.
British civil engineer Tony Deane began digging beneath his family home in the 1980s. His six children later joined the project. The description says chalk and earth were removed by hand, using buckets and wheelbarrows.
The site also includes a garden, swimming pool and a three-storey workshop of about 2,556 square feet. Planning permission granted by West Berkshire Council in December 2024 allows a five-bedroom house to be built on the pool site and the workshop to be converted into a separate three-bedroom home.
The auction is scheduled for Oct. 28 and 29, 2026. The auction listing says the property will be sold in an online auction and gives a guide price of £300,000 to £325,000.
