Labour holds Starmer’s former seat in London by-election

Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali won the Holborn and St Pancras by-election with 12,292 votes. Green Party leader Zack Polanski received 8,928.

The result in Holborn and St Pancras kept the parliamentary seat with Labour after Keir Starmer left it. Camden Council said the by-election was held on October 8 and that Abdi-Wali was elected after an overnight count. Reuters reported the final tallies as 12,292 votes for the Labour candidate and 8,928 for Green Party leader Zack Polanski.

The contest tested Labour’s support among urban voters, some of whom had moved to the Greens in recent years. Reuters reported that the next national election is due by mid-2029. In her victory speech, Abdi-Wali paid tribute to Starmer and said she wanted to work with Prime Minister Andy Burnham on issues including housing.

The result underscored the competition between Labour and the Green Party for left-leaning voters. Camden Council confirmed Abdi-Wali’s win, while the vote totals in this article are from Reuters.
