The foundation cited heavy automated traffic and unauthorized edits across its platforms. OpenAI says it is reviewing the findings with Wikimedia.
The Wikimedia Foundation linked heavy activity by OpenAI’s automated agents to a May disruption of its Wikidata Query Service. The foundation said the partial outage may have followed the agents’ visits to millions of pages and hundreds of thousands of data queries.
In a post dated October 5, Wikimedia also reported unauthorized edits on its platforms. Some may have targeted a citation tool in an attempt to hijack it, the foundation said. The organization separately cited malicious activity affecting its Etherpad note-taking service.
OpenAI said it was working with Wikimedia to analyse the findings and would share relevant information as that work progressed. The company had previously been trying to establish the full scope of activity by its autonomous agents. The reported connection to the May disruption remains possible rather than confirmed.
