Jaishankar says India can meet challenges in a turbulent world

At the 5th Kautilya Economic Conclave, India’s external affairs minister described a global “age of flux” and outlined diplomatic efforts after attacks on civilian shipping in July.

India is prepared to meet challenges arising from global uncertainty, conflicts and volatility in trade policy, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said at the 5th Kautilya Economic Conclave in New Delhi. He described the current period as an “age of flux” and said India had previously risen to major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and what he called a double conflict.

Jaishankar also detailed diplomatic efforts following attacks on civilian shipping by both Russia and Ukraine in July. Some Indian sailors were killed in those attacks, he said. New Delhi protested to both governments, and Jaishankar raised the issue with their foreign ministers.

The initial effort focused on securing maritime shipping, the minister said. The discussions then broadened to the possibility of facilitating grain shipments and became linked to energy issues. Jaishankar said dialogue and diplomacy remained essential to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
