Military analyst Andrey Kolesnik told Lenta.ru that protecting against long-range strikes requires layered defences and separate funding for counterintelligence and counterterrorism units. His comments followed a drone attack in Omsk region.

Kolesnik called for better protection of industrial facilities and closer monitoring of the skies. He said the relevant units should expand their staffing to identify groups he described as “sleeper” cells.

On October 8, Omsk region Governor Vitaly Khotsenko said air defences were responding to an attack and later reported that one drone had reached a northern industrial hub. Omsk region is about 2,500 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. Khotsenko gave no details of casualties or confirmed damage. The Associated Press also reported the attack and quoted the governor as saying that most of the drones had been intercepted while one reached an industrial site.

Kolesnik also said he believed a retaliatory strike by Ukraine’s armed forces was unavoidable. Lenta.ru did not provide corroboration for that prediction.

Lenta.ru separately cited Russia’s Defence Ministry as saying that air defences had downed 1,062 Ukrainian drones over the preceding 24 hours. The governor urged residents to remain calm and rely on verified information.
