ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa urged party volunteers to grow support in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo ahead of South Africa’s local government elections.

Ramaphosa met party activists in Stutterheim, in the Amahlathi District. He described the Eastern Cape and Limpopo as ANC strongholds and urged volunteers to work harder to reach voters. Local government elections are scheduled for November 4, according to the Presidency.

Addressing the volunteers, Ramaphosa said they were following in the footsteps of movement leaders including Nelson Mandela and OR Tambo. He also cited women activists Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.

SABC News reported the meeting and the ANC leader’s remarks. The Presidency says the country will vote for local government on November 4 and has declared Election Day a public holiday.
