Basanth Peringode’s murals join Rashtrapati Bhavan museum collection

The Kerala artist’s work will introduce visitors to the state’s traditional mural art at the presidential museum in New Delhi.

Mural artist and art director Basanth Peringode has created works for the permanent collection of the Rashtrapati Bhavan museum in New Delhi. The Hindu reported that he was selected for the project from a group of eminent artists from across India. The works draw on Kerala’s mural tradition and will become part of the museum collection.

Peringode spent several days at the presidential estate, working on the commission under the authorities’ supervision. His murals attracted appreciation from Rashtrapati Bhavan officials and visitors. President Droupadi Murmu gave the artist special recognition for his contribution. Peringode said this was his second invitation to Rashtrapati Bhavan and that he had also been invited to take part in another major project there.

Peringode previously taught at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit and has worked as an art director and production designer in cinema. His work has appeared in exhibitions in India and abroad, and his artistic interventions have featured in projects at several airports.

The permanent display will give visitors from India and overseas a view of Kerala’s traditional art. The Hindu described the commission as a milestone in Peringode’s career across murals, film, exhibitions and public art.
