Bangladesh selects 18 sub-registrars for Dhaka postings by lottery

The candidates were chosen from 131 ‘A-category’ officials. Final placements will consider qualifications and workload.

Eighteen sub-registrars have been selected by lottery for postings at key registry offices in Dhaka. They were drawn from 131 ‘A-category’ officials working in different parts of Bangladesh. Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman said the final placements would take account of experience, ability to handle workloads and the needs of the relevant offices.

The lottery was held at the law ministry on Tuesday in the presence of the minister and ministry secretary Liaquat Ali Molla. Asaduzzaman described Dhaka postings as ‘prize postings’ and said the new process was intended to address negative perceptions and improve transparency.

There are 372 sub-registrars currently working nationwide, while about 139 positions are vacant, the minister said. The government plans to consider extending transparent selection procedures to other postings regarded as especially desirable and associated with allegations of entrenched corruption.

The draw selected candidates, the ministry said their specific placements would depend on professional qualifications and workload requirements.
