
An Australian trekker who went missing on the Via Romea Germanica was found in the woods of Italy’s Arezzo province. He was airlifted and taken to hospital.
The man became lost near Alpe di Catenaia while walking the route between Chitignano and Subbiano. He failed to arrive at his booked hotel on Tuesday evening. Search teams began work the next day but paused overnight because of heavy rain in the mountainous area.
A fire service helicopter spotted the hiker in a difficult-to-reach location on Thursday morning. The operation involved Tuscan mountain rescuers, firefighters and Carabinieri. Rescuers brought him to medical staff.
Il Fatto Quotidiano reported that the 82-year-old was in fair condition after two nights outdoors. He was taken to Arezzo hospital for medical checks.
