The axe used in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is estimated at £30,000–£50,000 and will go up for auction with items from the director’s personal archive in London on February 3.
Props and materials from director Stanley Kubrick’s personal archive will be offered at Bonhams. The items include the axe wielded by Jack Nicholson’s character Jack Torrance to break through a door in the 1980 film The Shining before saying, “Here’s Johnny!” It is estimated at £30,000–£50,000. The Guardian reported that the sale will take place in London on February 3; the Associated Press also confirmed the archive sale and the axe’s estimate.
Other lots include the two blue dresses worn by the Grady sisters in the film, clapperboards and scripts annotated by Kubrick with drawings and alternative scene versions. Materials from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut are also included.
The most valuable item is expected to be the Star Child model from the final scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which could be estimated at up to £800,000. These are preliminary auction estimates, not guaranteed sale prices.
