Bioeconomy strategy includes eco-settlements in the Russian Arctic

Developing bio-ecological settlements is listed as a priority for the Russian Arctic’s bioeconomy. The strategy runs through 2036 and sets out a longer-term perspective to 2050.

The creation of bio-ecological settlements is listed as a priority for developing the bioeconomy in Russia’s Arctic Zone. This is set out in a strategy through 2036, with a longer-term perspective to 2050, RIA Novosti reported, citing the document.

Other priorities for the Arctic include studying biodiversity and identifying biological resources, developing cryotechnologies, building autonomous life-support systems and ensuring environmental safety. The strategy places the regional agenda within the broader development of the bioeconomy.

The government approved the nationwide bioeconomy strategy the previous day. Its priorities include strengthening the technological base, deep processing of biological resources and wider use of biotechnology in traditional industries.

An explanatory note to the draft federal budget says about 12 billion roubles is planned for the national bioeconomy project in 2027–2029. That amount concerns the national project as a whole; the report did not specify separate funding for the eco-settlements.
