Chinese woman gives birth at 60; Russian academic comments on rare case

A woman in China has given birth to a daughter at 60, two years after having a son. Russian Academy of Sciences academic Gennady Onishchenko said such a case is possible but depends on individual health conditions.

South China Morning Post reported that a 60-year-old woman in China had given birth to a child. The newspaper said she had welcomed a son two years earlier and has now had a daughter. The story prompted discussion on Chinese social media.

Commenting to RIA Novosti, Gennady Onishchenko, deputy president of the Russian Academy of Education and an academic of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said pregnancy at that age was possible only in isolated cases. He linked it to the continuation of the menstrual cycle and individual health factors, including hormonal function and medical support.

Onishchenko also offered his view that men may retain the ability to father children at an older age. His remarks were a comment on a particular case, not individual medical advice.

South China Morning Post described the birth as unusual. Claims about pregnancy at an advanced age do not replace a consultation with a doctor: risks and medical circumstances vary from person to person.
