Official teaser for Artificial from distributor NEON. It shows footage from the film, not the premiere or critics’ reactions.

The film, starring Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, premiered at the New York Film Festival. Some critics called it one of the director’s strongest films in years, while others were less impressed.

Luca Guadagnino’s film Artificial premiered at the New York Film Festival. It centers on OpenAI’s 2023 crisis, including CEO Sam Altman’s firing and return. Andrew Garfield plays Altman; the cast also includes Yura Borisov, Ike Barinholtz and Monica Barbaro.

Early reviews were mostly positive. Variety called the film a provocative corporate drama and quoted critic Clayton Davis, who described it as Guadagnino’s best work in a decade. Matt Neglia, editor-in-chief of Next Best Picture, called it both entertaining and frightening.

The response was not unanimous: The Guardian described the movie as a muddled tech satire, while Screen Daily called it visually striking but unconvincing. At the time of CNN Brasil’s report, the film had 11 reviews and a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes; that figure may change as more reviews are published.

The film dramatizes events surrounding OpenAI and the fast-moving artificial-intelligence industry; it is a fictional interpretation, not a documentary account. Its U.S. release is scheduled for Dec. 25, while no Brazilian release date has been announced.
