Barcelona and Spain midfielder Dani Olmo donates 2% of his annual salary to support the Croatian cities of Vukovar and Slavonski Brod. His agent recently disclosed the contributions. Ahead of Spain’s match against Croatia, Olmo confirmed them and said he had not known the information had become public.
Olmo was born in Spain but developed as a player at Dinamo Zagreb, where he made his professional debut and played from 2014 to 2020. He said he felt grateful to Croatia for what he received during that period. The donations go through Common Goal, an international initiative that supports social projects through football.
Vukovar suffered heavily during Croatia’s 1991 war of independence and was devastated by the fighting. Olmo said the support through Common Goal also helps families in Slavonski Brod.
Local journalists applauded Olmo when he spoke in Croatian about his connection to the country at a news conference before the match. Spain is scheduled to play Croatia in the Nations League in Split on October 6.
