The arrests were announced after a coordinated crackdown aimed at strengthening passenger safety on the state’s rail network. Police said the operation targeted thieves who prey on passengers sleeping on trains or waiting on platforms at night, as well as those who exploit crowded coaches.
According to officials, the 48 suspects – some hailing from other Indian states – have been placed in judicial custody pending further investigation.
The police highlighted that the arrests followed "detailed scientific investigations" carried out with the assistance of the Railway Cyber Cell and intelligence units, which helped identify the perpetrators and trace the stolen goods.
Authorities recovered valuables exceeding ₹30 lakh from those detained. The seized items include 54 mobile phones, two laptops, gold ornaments, ₹90,000 in cash, chargers and other electronic equipment.
Railway officials said efforts are now underway to locate the rightful owners of the recovered items and return them where possible.
In addition to the arrests, the Railway Police announced that surveillance and inspections have been intensified across railway stations to deter future robberies and protect commuters.
