The meeting took place at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Japan, where Govindaraj and Coventry discussed a range of issues, including the promotion of sports in the Indian state of Karnataka.
Govindaraj outlined the Karnataka Olympic Association’s programmes and initiatives aimed at boosting grassroots participation and elite performance, emphasizing the state’s emergence as a hub for basketball and other sports.
He extended an invitation to Coventry to visit Bengaluru in the future, citing the city’s growing reputation after hosting more than twelve international basketball tournaments.
Govindaraj also informed Coventry that the FIBA Asia Women’s Basketball League is slated to be staged in Bengaluru next month, a move that could further raise the city’s profile on the international basketball calendar.
The dialogue underscores a strengthening partnership between Indian sports bodies and the IOC, with potential implications for increased investment, infrastructure development, and greater international exposure for Karnataka’s athletes.
