The arrests were made under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, with officers in forensic suits photographed searching a white Mercedes that had been surrounded by police vehicles on Newton Street.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans of Counter Terrorism Policing said the timing of the arrests would understandably cause “further concern” for the Jewish community, especially given the significance of the High Holy Days, but added that detectives do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the wider public.
The Community Security Trust (CST) called the alleged plot “utterly chilling”, noting its proximity to the one‑year anniversary of the October 2, 2025 attack on Heaton Park synagogue that left two worshippers dead.
Greater Manchester Police said a visible police presence would be maintained throughout the Jewish High Holy Days, with Chief Superintendent Dave Meeney stressing the force’s commitment to providing “as much visibility and security as we can”.
Green Party MP Hannah Spencer expressed horror at the suspected plot, urging collective action against antisemitism and praising the authorities for their vigilance during the solemn observance.
