Officials K. Gunasekaran and S. Gopalakrishnan reviewed readiness across Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur and the Nilgiris. The new coverage adds services beyond the ordinary buses on which the existing benefit has operated since 2021.
The state says 12,692 government buses will be covered across the network, including Express, Limited Stop Service, Deluxe, mofussil, ordinary and ghat-ordinary services. The announcement sets no income ceiling or limit on the number of journeys.
The expansion moves the scheme into a wider range of journeys, including services used between towns and in hill districts. The transport department’s preparations in western Tamil Nadu are part of the statewide rollout planned for October 2.
