J.R. Smith was arrested in Texas on Tuesday under a warrant issued in Southlake. ESPN reported that Royse City police detained the 41-year-old on an allegation of assault causing bodily injury in a domestic-violence case. Police have not released details of the alleged incident or identified the other person.
CBS News said the arrest followed a traffic stop, when an automated licence-plate recognition system alerted officers to an active warrant for Smith's vehicle. TMZ reported that he remained at the county detention centre and that bail had not initially been set.
Smith's previous legal case dates to 2012, when he received a 90-day jail sentence, with 60 days suspended, and 500 hours of community service for reckless driving after a 2010 crash in which his friend died.
He played 16 NBA seasons, winning titles with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 alongside LeBron James and with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2020 pandemic-era bubble. He was the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2012/13.
Across 977 games, including 395 starts, Smith averaged 12.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists. After retiring from basketball, he pursued education and collegiate golf and graduated in May.
