Explosion in Bergamo leaves about 50 residents displaced

The explosion struck an apartment on the ground floor of a building on Via Longo in Bergamo on the evening of October 5. Police believe it began in the kitchen. A Romanian-origin couple inside the apartment were both seriously injured.

Nine people were hurt in total. Two were taken to hospital in serious condition, two suffered moderate injuries and five minor injuries. The woman is in a life-threatening condition. Firefighters declared the building uninhabitable. About 50 residents were accommodated by relatives or in hotels arranged by the municipality.

The blast wave damaged nearby buildings, but officials deemed them safe and said no evacuation was needed. Firefighters and police attended the scene. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
