Sydney police seek witnesses after fatal Mount Druitt stabbing

Police appealed on October 10 for around a dozen people near the scene of a fatal assault in Mount Druitt, western Sydney, to come forward. A man in his 30s died from stab wounds on the evening of October 9.
Emergency services were called to Cleeve Close shortly before 9 p.m. following a report of an assault. The location is near the Westfield shopping centre and railway station. Police found a man with wounds to his torso. Officers and paramedics tried to help him, but he died at the scene.
Blacktown Police Area Command superintendent Brendan Gorman said the victim still had to be formally identified. He asked those nearby at the time to contact investigators. The appeal to about a dozen people does not mean that all are considered suspects.
Published CCTV recordings show a group of men pushing and kicking a man in a white hoodie, then chasing him and striking him while he lies on the road. Gorman said the events leading up to the stabbing remained under investigation. Police are examining CCTV and mobile-phone recordings.
Investigators are establishing whether the assault was random or targeted. Possible organised-crime links involving the victim have not been confirmed. Gorman could not say whether passers-by had helped the man. Witnesses and people with CCTV or dashcam recordings were asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
