Amazon shopper finds an unexpected guess in her profile

A customer found the phrase “has flat buttocks” among Amazon’s assumptions about her in its “About You” section. She shared a screenshot and a joking reaction on Threads.

An Amazon customer found personal characteristics in her account settings that the company associates with her shopping history. Alongside relatively ordinary assumptions — such as that she shops in women’s departments or probably owns a Shark robot vacuum — was a startling one: “has flat buttocks.”

Threads user @fangirlinmegan wrote that she was “literally speechless” after seeing the list of assumptions Amazon had made from her purchases. She added that the guess was not entirely wrong, but asked whether the company had to call her out so bluntly. The post drew more than a million views in less than a day.

TechCrunch describes the page as a list of conclusions Amazon associates with customers’ shopping preferences. The publication said the feature had also correctly identified some of its staff members’ interests, including photography, collectible card games, the Apple ecosystem, vinyl records and ceramics. Those examples are the writers’ personal observations, not a representative test of the system.

To view the section in a desktop browser, TechCrunch says to open the account menu from “Hello, [your name],” go to Account, then “Your Shopping preferences” under “Ordering and shopping preferences.” A “Manage your information” link appears near the bottom. In the mobile app, the route is through the hamburger menu: Account, Shopping preferences, About you. Menu labels may vary with the interface version.

The story illustrates how personalization can make a service more convenient while detailed inferences about customers can also surprise them and raise questions about how much platforms derive from everyday activity. Amazon had not commented to TechCrunch by the time the article was published; the outlet said it had requested more information.
