Hunters shoot bear after it kills two pigs in Russia's Zabaykalsky Krai

Hunters have shot a bear that entered a private yard in Bilyutuy, a village in the Kyrinsky district of Russia's Zabaykalsky Krai, the regional natural resources ministry said.

The animal killed two domestic pigs. The ministry said its presence close to homes posed a potential threat to residents. A mobile hunting group responded to the report and killed the bear.

District head Lyubov Sakiyaeva confirmed the shooting to Chita.ru. She said groups of licensed, armed hunters had been formed in each village, with an operational group also working with the district administration.

Sakiyaeva had earlier described the incident as the district's first case of a bear entering a village, rather than appearing nearby. In some villages where bears had been seen, schools moved the start of classes to a later time so that children would not have to walk to lessons in the dark.
