Ingushetia’s children’s ombudswoman, Zarema Chakhkieva, has asked law-enforcement agencies to investigate reports that the parents of a seriously ill infant left the child at a Moscow hospital and used money raised for treatment for other purposes. The baby is less than a month old. RIA Novosti reported Chakhkieva’s statement on October 5. The allegations have not been established by an official inquiry.
According to Chakhkieva, charities paid for travel and accommodation, while Ingushetia’s health ministry helped arrange the child’s transport to Moscow for treatment. She said the parents later declined to accompany the infant and that funds transferred by a charity were spent on their own needs.
Chakhkieva said she had contacted the prosecutor’s office, the Interior Ministry and guardianship authorities. She asked them to investigate the parents’ conduct, check whether the family is registered with police, monitor the situation and provide a legal assessment. Any conclusions about possible wrongdoing are for the authorities to make after their inquiry.
