Kalshi traders see rising odds of 5,100 U.S. data centers by 2027

The prediction market puts the chance of more than 5,100 operating or planned sites before 2027 at 75%.

Traders on prediction market Kalshi put a 75% probability on the number of planned and operating data centers in the United States exceeding 5,100 before 2027. The odds were 60% two weeks earlier. The contract will be resolved using Data Center Map, CNBC reported.

Data Center Map lists more than 4,700 operating and planned facilities in the country. Virginia leads with more than 670, followed by Texas with 537 and California with more than 200.

Construction is expanding in states including Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The buildout has drawn opposition from residents and activists who say data centers could increase local utility costs and consume substantial amounts of water.

CNBC cited Oracle’s New Mexico project as one example of the pressures around new infrastructure. Bloomberg previously reported that Oracle sent its developer a force majeure notice amid a risk that the site would miss its anticipated 2028 start. Applications for a gas pipeline intended to fuel the project have also faced regulatory setbacks.

Kalshi’s odds reflect trader positions, not a verified forecast of construction. CNBC disclosed that it has a commercial relationship with Kalshi that includes customer acquisition and a minority investment.
