The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania is almost certain to stay out of the next cabinet, its leader Hunor Kelemen said, while leaving open support for a government built around the PSD with PNL participation.
UDMR president Hunor Kelemen said after meeting Romanian President Nicușor Dan that his party was almost certain not to join the next government. The previous cabinet had failed in Parliament the week before, he said, and nothing had changed to justify entering a different coalition only days later.
Kelemen did not rule out backing a government formed around the Social Democratic Party (PSD), provided the National Liberal Party (PNL), or part of it, also assumed responsibility for securing its investiture. One possible arrangement, he said, would be for the parties to supply the necessary votes together — for example, 40 — and then act independently.
Asked about his morning meeting with PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu, Kelemen said Grindeanu had not asked UDMR to support a PSD-AUR government. Kelemen said his party could not work with AUR or SOS Romania.
He also rejected the prospect of an early election, arguing it would not resolve the country’s problems and would make matters harder in a fragmented Parliament. Kelemen said Dan could make two further nominations for prime minister to encourage dialogue, adding that room for talks remained.
