The project at Kayamkulam is part of the state’s response to electricity shortages, alongside a solar project and additional supply from Maharashtra.
Kerala plans to build a 2,000 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system at Kayamkulam in cooperation with state-run NTPC. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced the plan after meeting senior NTPC officials in New Delhi. Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph also attended.
The Kerala State Electricity Board, NTPC and its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding. The facility is planned on NTPC land at the currently unused Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant. The meeting also produced an agreement to speed up a 27 MW solar project in Kayamkulam.
NTPC has separately agreed to supply Kerala with 300 MW from its project at Sinnar in Maharashtra at ₹5.18 per unit, Satheesan said. The announcement did not specify a delivery timetable. State officials described the agreements as measures to address electricity shortages and strengthen long-term energy security.
