Moldova’s Tofan plans Ukraine visit to discuss potential gas supplies

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan plans to visit Ukraine at the end of the week, with potential gas supplies among the topics for discussion.

Tofan told a cabinet meeting that intensive discussions were underway about cooperation in the gas market. He said Ukraine produces gas and has a surplus that could form the basis for an agreement.

The visit’s agenda also includes energy, water resources, trade and security. Tofan said his government is continuing to seek alternative suppliers and favourable contracts.

He identified Azerbaijan, Qatar and Turkmenistan among the countries with which Moldova wants to develop relations. He did not announce an agreement on specific volumes or a start date for deliveries.

Since December 2022, Moldova has bought gas on European spot markets through state-owned Energocom. Supplies previously came through Moldovagaz, half of which is owned by Gazprom.
