CPI(M) Kozhikode unit weighs changes to district leadership

A two-day extended committee meeting is considering possible new invitees and changes to the district secretariat. No final decisions have been announced.

New faces may join the Communist Party of India (Marxist) district committee in Kozhikode. The two-day extended meeting began on October 6 at the AKG Auditorium, The Hindu reported, citing party sources.

Area secretaries T.K. Sumesh of Balussery, T.K. Chandran of Koyilandy, K. Ajayakumar of Kozhikode Town and P.K.E. Chandran of Kakkodi may be added as permanent invitees. Some district officials of the Democratic Youth Federation of India may also be included. The report said senior leader C. Bhaskaran could be relieved of his district-secretariat post because of his age, and that other additions to the secretariat were possible. None of the changes had been confirmed at the time of publication.

The meeting was opened by Pinarayi Vijayan, the state Leader of the Opposition and a member of the party’s Polit Bureau. Central Committee members E.P. Jayarajan, K.K. Shailaja, P. Sathidevi, C.S. Sujatha and T.P. Ramakrishnan are attending, along with state-secretariat members.

Vijayan accused the Congress-led United Democratic Front government of implementing the agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The allegation is his political claim. The meeting also passed a resolution criticising the central government and the Enforcement Directorate. The resolution alleged that the agency had asked state police to register a case against Vijayan and P.A. Mohamed Riyas in the CMRL–Exalogic case, while claiming that searches at their residences had produced no evidence implicating them.

Delegates discussed an organisational report prepared by district secretary M. Mehboob before opening a debate scheduled to continue on October 7. The meeting is due to conclude with Mehboob’s response and a possible announcement on leadership changes.
