
After Lionel Messi’s final match for Argentina, Neymar thanked his former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain teammate for his influence on football.
“It’s not just Argentina that thanks you. The whole world thanks you for everything you did for football. Thank you for making me love the game even more,” Neymar wrote. Sky Sport Germany carried his message. Reuters also reported that the Brazilian posted the tribute to Messi on X.
Argentina beat Benin 3-0 in Buenos Aires on Oct. 6. Messi scored a penalty and contributed to the other two goals, the Argentine Football Association said.
The 39-year-old forward ended his international career after 21 years with the national team, 208 appearances and 126 goals, according to the Associated Press and Reuters. Neymar played alongside him at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
