Novosibirsk student compiles English–Russian fencing glossary with 439 entries

Novosibirsk State University student Taisia Shustova has compiled an English–Russian glossary of fencing terminology and professional slang containing 439 entries, the university said.

Shustova proposed her own translations for 24 terms and 14 slang expressions that, according to the university, lack equivalents in existing sources. The glossary is intended for translators working across differences between Russian and foreign fencing schools.

She said some English fencing vocabulary has no established Russian equivalent, including names for attacks and strokes as well as slang. One example is a martingale, a wrist attachment that helps beginners control an épée.

Shustova practised fencing for 13 years and holds the Russian Candidate Master of Sport rank. She enrolled at the university to study translation and studied English and Chinese. She now plans to undertake similar work on Chinese fencing vocabulary.
