Old Berlin poplar cut down beside St Petersburg's Bank Bridge

An old Berlin poplar has been cut down beside Bank Bridge on St Petersburg's Griboyedov Canal. The Trees of Petersburg community reported a fresh stump, and Fontanka readers said the tree was removed on the evening of October 19.

The tree stood opposite St Petersburg State University of Economics. The community published a photograph of the remaining stump, Moika78 reported.

Activists placed a commemorative plaque on the tree in March 2019, when its age was estimated at 109 years. It may therefore have been about 116 years old when removed.

Fontanka linked the tree to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which depicts it alongside Bank Bridge and other recognisable St Petersburg landmarks.
