Contract worker dies after incident at Greece's Motor Oil refinery

A second worker remains in serious condition after an incident during maintenance.

One person died and another remained in serious condition after an incident on October 9 at the Motor Oil refinery west of Athens. Both worked for a contractor, the company said.

The accident occurred during maintenance, and the workers were taken to hospital. Motor Oil's statement did not provide details establishing the precise cause of the incident.

The company said the competent authorities were investigating and that it was cooperating fully. Reuters reported that Motor Oil had not reported a fire or damage to the refinery, which continued operating normally on Friday.

The facility is Greece's second-largest refinery and accounts for more than a third of the country's refining capacity. Three people were injured in a fire there in 2024. That was a separate incident and does not establish the cause of the latest accident.
