Orbán jokes about “room in the trunk” after Hungary-Ukraine match

The Hungarian prime minister said he had come for three points. The remark recalled a campaign video last year showing a bound man in a car trunk.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended his national team’s Nations League match against Ukraine in Trnava, Slovakia, and shared a short video on Facebook. Asked what he expected from the game, Orbán laughed and said: “I came with a big bag. I want to take home three points. There’s room in the trunk.”

The Hungarian outlet 24.hu noted the final line’s resemblance to a campaign video posted last summer by Fidesz lawmaker Alexandra Szentkirályi. That video showed a man with bound hands and a taped mouth locked in a car trunk. Szentkirályi suggested that Ukraine joining the European Union would bring threats including organ, weapons and drug trafficking, as well as human trafficking.

24.hu drew a comparison between Orbán’s remark and the earlier political video. The report did not say the prime minister was explicitly referring to that campaign. Ukraine plays its home matches abroad because of the war, so the Nations League fixture was held in Slovakia.
