Russian presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev met with executives of the Waigaoqiao shipyard in Shanghai. They discussed sharing engineering expertise and expanding cooperation between Russian and Chinese shipbuilders.

Patrushev arrived in China on October 8 at the head of a Russian delegation. Interfax reported that the talks also covered links between design teams at Chinese shipyards and Russian shipbuilding design bureaus.

The chairman of Russia’s Maritime Board said Russian companies could interest Chinese partners because of their specialized capabilities. He cited the construction of nuclear icebreakers and vessels built for high ice classes.

Patrushev said shipbuilding cooperation between the two countries remains limited but has room to develop, including through the participation of the Shanghai shipyard.
